Why I Love Tonke Dragt's Books So Much & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK                  Amazon USA Amazon UK

Yesterday it was the publication date of The Secrets of the Wild Wood by Tonke Dragt. It's the second book about Knight Tiuri and his friend Piak. Together they've been through a lot in The Letter for the King and they're back to have another great adventure together. I think both books are amazing and they have a special meaning to me. When I was ten years old I had a wonderful teacher. The Letter for the King was his favorite book and he read a little bit of the story to his class almost every day. Soon he turned thirty children into Tonke Dragt fans. It was the last book he would ever read and he put so much love, care and devotion into it. He was passionate about teaching, about reading and about writing stories and he passed on that love. Unfortunately we were his last class and he died from cancer a few months later.

I've always read a lot of books. Ever since I could read I read as much as I could. I was bored at school quite a lot and was lucky that there were plenty of books to fill my days. Fortunately they gave me the chance to read as I wouldn't have known what to do otherwise. In the year my teacher taught his last class I was really sick and nearly died. I saw him more often out of the classroom than inside it as he always came to visit. Whenever he talked about books he talked about these books. A few years ago I bought them for myself and it was wonderful to reread them. I keep telling everyone how good they are. I think I appreciate them even more now I'm an adult and I've already reread the stories several times. They're fantastic adventures and the main characters are really special.

I want to spread the love and am therefore giving away a paperback copy of both books to one lucky winner. Good luck!

Book Review: Eggshells by Caitriona Lally

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Vivian isn't like most other people. She's living in a world where fairytales are part of reality, where personal hygiene isn't the most important thing in the world and where she's perfectly happy with her own company. She tries to be more social though. She's inherited her great-aunt's house and after her death Vivian needs to find a new balance, to make an every day life for herself that she enjoys. She reaches out to her sister, she tries to find a friend, but only one who's called Penelope, and she walks. She takes a different route every day and walks through Dublin. She thinks she's a Changeling and hopes she will be able to find a way back to the world she's originally from...

Vivian is unusual and I love the way Caitriona Lally has portrayed her. She might be odd, but she's also lovely. She has a special mind which works a little differently and I loved reading about her world and the way she sees life. Vivian does find her friend. Penelope is sometimes too much for Vivian, but as they are friends they keep seeing each other and they have a couple of adventures together as well. One is a visit to Penelope's mother that doesn't go according to plan at all. I read this book with a smile on my face. The story is beautiful, Vivian is such an interesting main character. I enjoyed reading about her walks and about the things she's hoping to see mixed with what she actually sees.

I liked reading about the way Vivian's mind works a lot. The sometimes simple and sometimes more complicated way she sees things is fantastic. I was so engrossed in the story that it almost felt like I was her every now and then. I think Caitriona Lally has an amazing talent. She can write about a topic that makes people think about so many different things in an enjoyable way. I love her wit and cleverness. I noticed things I wouldn't normally pay attention to because of the way Vivian sees the world. Eggshells is special. I loved all the little details that for me made Vivian's world come to life even more. Details like her sickly goldfish which she therefore calls Lemonfish, the way she washes herself, the description of the scents that are important to her, the way she makes herself feel comfortable, the fact that she has a sister who's also called Vivian and so many other things which in my opinion are making the story great. Eggshells is a real treasure, it's a book I want to hug.

Book Review: The First Days by Rhiannon Frater

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Anniek

Katie finds Jenni outside her house watching the front door. The world is falling apart around her. Katie saves her by getting her into a truck. Together they have to face the new world. Katie is the daughter of a policeman so she knows her way with guns. In a world which is changing fast they have to make quick decisions, sometimes they have to leave people behind and sometimes they stay.

Katie and Jenni decided early on to not stay around the big cities and they end up in a little town in Texas. Around an old hotel they are building walls fast to keep the living safe inside and the dead outside. But it turns out that inside the walls it isn't that safe after all...

Katie and Jenni become like sisters. In all the mess that is going on they both find love inside their sanctuary. They have to go outside the walls from time to time to keep having food and all kinds of other usefull things. They also go out of their way to bring survivors in if they can get to them in a safe way and on time.

Have you ever read a story that you know will stay with you, a story that you will think about every now and then and that you know you will be reading again and again and then some more? Well, that is what this story did to me. I was sold from the very first line. I cried and laughed while reading and couldn't wait to get the other 2 books. It is a trilogy and there are also short stories in the form of untold tales that tell you more about the characters.

Even though this is a book about zombies, it is more about the survivors, how you can build a new city within chaos and how to find love after all the loss. It's about what life will be like if someone won't return from getting food or what if there is a threat that you will become dinner. Rhiannon Frater did a fantastic job writing this story. You will love Katie and Jenni and they will be in your heart! If you are interested in this genre, don't hesitate and get this series. And I recommend getting the complete series straight away, because once I started reading I didn't want to stop.

Book Review: Last First Kiss by Lia Riley

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Annie has a highly successful blog. She writes about her wonderful life. In reality things are a little bit less perfect though. Together with her son she moved back into her childhood home in Brightwater, a small countryside town. She wants to fix up the house, so it can be sold. The place gives her mixed feelings as she loves the surroundings, but not the people in the town. They've never been welcoming towards her. There's one exception though, her gorgeous neighbor Sawyer. He's the local sheriff and he's as friendly as he used to be. Annie once thought they were going to be a couple, but he betrayed her in a terrible way.

Together with her son Atticus Annie tries to make the best of her stay. Sawyer keeps doing little things for them. He wants to get a second chance with Annie, it's all he's ever wanted. Only she's not in Brightwater to stay. She has other plans and he doesn't know if he can convince her to change them...

Last First Kiss is such a sweet romantic book. Annie and Sawyer have great chemistry. In Lia Riley's books the sex scenes are never just about sex, they always mean something. I think that makes her novels even stronger. I wanted Annie to be happy after all she had to go through and Sawyer is a good guy. Only he has so much making up to do. For the things he's done, but mostly for what other people have done to Annie. He's finally standing up for them and I really enjoyed reading about it.

Atticus is a sweet boy and he and Annie are a great duo. I didn't only love the main characters in this novel though, Every person in this book has distinctive characteristics and that made the story even more interesting. I liked everything about Last First Kiss. Lia Riley is a strong story teller, I love the way she creates an atmosphere. Brightwater is an amazing setting and I can't wait to read more about the town and its inhabitants.
