Book Review & Giveaway: The Summer We Loved by Wendy Lou Jones

Amazon USA Amazon UK

 Review by Suze

Jenny is in her early thirties and she's still single. She's secretly in love with Peter, but Peter only does one night stands and there's no room for love in his life. Jenny is a nurse and Peter is studying to become a consultant. Unfortunately after a horrible accident he can't cope with his emotions very well. When tragedy strikes again he's losing himself and Jenny is the only person who can reach him. She tries to get him back on track, but while doing that she's putting her own heart on the line. Will she be capable of dealing with the inevitable hurt and what will be the consequences?

The Summer We Loved can be read as a standalone novel, but I would recommend to read By My Side first. It's one of my all time favorite novels and I highly recommend it. I'm a big fan of Wendy Lou Jones's writing. The Summer We Loved has the same beautiful style, it's distinctive and it's easy to recognize. She plays with time, with emotions and with words and she does that really well. I love how she makes her characters come to life. I could picture Jenny and Peter so well. Wendy Lou Jones doesn't make life any prettier than it is. Her stories are no fairytales, they're real and they're raw.

While reading The Summer We Loved I felt quite a lot of emotions. Sometimes I had a smile on my face and I also shed a few tears. I always love it when a book makes me feel so many things. Jenny and Peter's story is gripping and I was intrigued from the start. They are both gorgeous people, but they are scarred and they've made mistakes. I liked the versatility and depth of their personalities. It's obvious that for both Jenny and Peter their job is important, they live for their patients. The story is set in a hospital and it's very realistic. I enjoyed learning some new things through the inside information and lingo. I can't praise The Summer We Loved enough, it's definitely as good as By My Side and I think Peter and Jenny's story is impressive, sometimes tragic, incredible and often absolutely wonderful.

Abbie Bennet is a sweet young girl. She's been raised in a secure home and she leaves the nest to live together with her best friend at the age of 20. Abbie is someone who likes her peace and quiet. She enjoys reading romance novels, drinks no alcohol, has a big loyal heart and loves to paint and sketch. When her friends persuade her to go clubbing she meets Valentine. He is the singer of a band. She is not looking for love and absolutely not looking to fall in love with a bad boy. Even though they hardly talked to each other she's lost from the moment she laid eyes on him.

When Valentine spots Abbie in the crowd he falls in love with her instantly. He is not the ultimate bad boy that everybody thinks he is. OK..he is married and getting divorced, he has a young son and he rides a bike but he has a good heart. Losing his mother has formed him and he truly wants to do good. He and Abbie fall madly in love together and can’t be apart from each other for very long.

You should think that there would be nothing in this world that could separate Abbie and Valentine! Well, think again...

I loved this book from the very beginning. Abbie is such a sweetheart, so I could relate to her very easily. She deserves to be loved and she deserves to be cherished. When she shares her dreams for the future with Valentine they discover that they are not on the same page.

In the beginning I liked Valentine a lot too. I liked the way he treats Abbie and how he makes her feel special every single day. During the story I found out that he has more flaws than I expected. I started to dislike him because of the choices he makes. This book finishes with an open ending, leaving it to the reader to speculate on what will happen next, please I hope that I am wrong about my thoughts. If my thinking is right than that would devastate Abbie and I sincerely wonder if she would recover. I can't wait to find out what will happen next...

Book Review: The Silent Hours by Cesca Major

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Adeline lives in a convent. Something has happened to her and it was so terrible that she hasn't been able to speak ever since. She's blocked most of her memories and nobody knows what's the matter. It's several years after the war now and they think it's time for her to get better help. Slowly some of her memories are coming back, but they are so painful, too painful to think about.

Tristan and his family moved from Paris to the French countryside at the start of the war, because of their safety. There he has to get used to a completely different life. School is different, he has more space to play, his friends are different and he doesn't understand what is happening. He wants to help and save his country, but he's very young and he has no idea what the consequences of his actions will be.

Sebastien is madly in love with Isabelle, but the war makes things difficult for the young couple. He's a Jewish banker and slowly his life is changing. He might lose everything that's dear to him. Isabelle loves him very much as well. They're a young couple who should have the time of their lives, but instead the war is threatening to spoil everything for them. When Sebastien is taking a great risk to see Isabelle he changes the course of his future. What will happen to these two people in love?

Isabelle is in love with Sebastien. It makes her happy that she's found the love of her life, but the war makes it difficult for her to love him freely. Especially when it isn't possible for Jews to have a normal existence any longer. She also misses her brother Paul dearly. He's been captured by the Germans and she has no idea when and if he'll be coming home. They're regularly exchanging letters, but their content is getting more sorrowful every time they write.

The stories of the main characters in this book are coming together at some point and that was such an emotional moment. I shed quite a lot of tears while reading this book. The Silent Hours is an impressive story about the war, about love and hate and about the terrible things that have been done to people. I don't understand cruelty and it always makes me feel sick. It's so unfair that Isabelle and Sebastien can't be happily in love and that a young guy like Paul has to wither away in prison. Every victim of war is one too many. I think The Silent Hours shows that in a beautiful way. I loved this book, it's absolutely amazing. The topic is a sad one, but there's also hope and that got me through the story. Even though the most terrible things were happening they had to end at some point, the only question is what will be left after so many years of misery. Cesca Major is a great author and The Silent Hours is definitely a book I will read again.

Sea Weekend Book Review: The Little Flower Shop by the Sea

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Poppy has inherited The Daisy Chain in St Felix. She's the sole beneficiary of her grandmother's estate, which means she now owns a home and a shop. She's thirty years old, hasn't been able to keep a job and has made a mess of her life so far. Her whole family is into flowers, but Poppy doesn't like them. By returning to St Felix Poppy returns to the happy memories of her childhood, the ones from before everything changed. She doesn't plan on staying, but then she meets Jake, the person who delivers the flowers to her grandmother's shop. She decides on a whim that she is going to stay and that she is going to run the shop.

As Poppy can't deal with flowers she needs help. The American Amber has been sent from New York by Poppy's mother. Poppy doesn't like anyone, but Amber's an exception. She even offers her a permanent stay in her spare bedroom. They're working hard to get the shop back into shape. Poppy's also seeing more of Jake, but both of them aren't ready for a relationship. Poppy because people only hurt her and Jake because he isn't over the death of his wife. Poppy starts to like it in St Felix and slowly the healing power of the town makes her feel more like herself again. Is there a chance at a happy future for her or will something or someone mess it up again?

Poppy is such a fantastic main character. She has an attitude, she's brutally honest and she doesn't stay away from a challenge. I loved her friends as well and I didn't want the story to end because I loved reading about them all. The Little Flower Shop by the Sea is such a wonderful and sweet read. The setting is beautiful and there's an element of magic in the story that I liked a lot. Flowers tell a story and they each have their own meaning. There's magic in The Daisy Chain and I love stories that have just a hint of that as an addition to real life. Every chapter starts with a different flower and an explanation, I liked that a lot.

For me this book has it all, it's very well written, the main characters are fantastic, the setting is stunning, the story is fascinating and there's some lovely romance. I couldn't put it down and enjoyed it very much. I love stories about small seaside towns and St Felix and its inhabitants are really special. I think this novel is absolutely perfect, it's a real treasure.

Sea Weekend Book Review: Racing the Sun by Karina Halle

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

After months of backpacking Amber is stranded in Italy. She doesn't have enough money for the plane ticket home, so she has to find a job. She finds a position as a teacher of a boy and a girl. They are twins and she's supposed to teach them English. They're living on Capri together with their older brother and housekeeper. Amber is hired before she can even say yes. She's supposed to stay at the villa. The job sounds ideal on paper, but in reality it's much more difficult. The twins are a challenge. Ever since their parents died they try to chase everyone away. Their brother Derio spends whole days in his office and hardly says a word.

Amber is determined to give the job a serious try. She feels bad for Derio because he's lost so much. Slowly they're starting to get used to each other and he willingly spends time with her. Amber likes him, a lot actually. The twins are still out of control, but after learning the hard way that their actions have consequences they're giving Amber a serious chance. Which is a blessing as soon her job description changes from teacher to nanny. Her relationship with Derio keeps improving as well. Will her arrival at their home be a blessing for this family and what happens when Amber's supposed to go home?

Racing the Sun is a story about an American girl who starts to work for an Italian family. Amber wanted to travel to find herself, to find out what she really wants in life. Because of the job and the responsibility that comes with it she discovers that she's capable of so much more than she initially thought. Her insecurities are never completely gone, but she's getting more confident while caring for the twins. I loved to see her grow and to see her come out of her shell. She learns to stand up for herself and to like herself a lot more.

Derio is a broken man and he's living a life in solitude. At first he hardly even talks to Amber, but she doesn't give up on him. I felt so bad for him and found him endearing. He's a sweet guy who has many problems. Instead of running away from them Amber helps him to face them. They're a wonderful match and I loved the chemistry between these two gorgeous people. The love scenes are fantastic and Karina Halle has done such a good job making them both meaningful and beautiful. I really enjoyed reading this amazing and wonderful love story. It was fun to learn more about Capri, I immediately wanted to pack my bags to explore the island. I highly recommend Racing the Sun, it's a fantastic summer story.
