Review: Geek Girl by Holly Smale

“My name is Harriet Manners, and I am a geek.”
Harriet Manners knows that a cat has 32 muscles in each ear, a “jiffy” lasts 1/100th of a second, and the average person laughs 15 times per day. She knows that bats always turn left when exiting a cave and that peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite.
But she doesn’t know why nobody at school seems to like her.
So when Harriet is spotted by a top model agent, she grabs the chance to reinvent herself. Even if it means stealing her best friend's dream, incurring the wrath of her arch enemy Alexa, and repeatedly humiliating herself in front of impossibly handsome model Nick. Even if it means lying to the people she loves.
Veering from one couture disaster to the next with the help of her overly enthusiastic father and her uber-geeky stalker, Toby, Harriet begins to realise that the world of fashion doesn't seem to like her any more than the real world did.
As her old life starts to fall apart, will Harriet be able to transform herself before she ruins everything?

Review by Sian (Tanya's daughter)

Geek Girl is about a girl called Harriet Manners who is a geek and her best friend Nat who wants to be a model. Both go on a trip to The Clothes Show live in Birmingham and Harriet gets spotted instead of Nat by a modelling agency, Infinity Models.

Harriet the geek always gives out random facts about various things. Such as ‘chewing gum is banned in Singapore’. She also hides under tables whenever she gets nervous and her first encounter with the cute model Nick is under a table. Her nemesis is Alexa Roberts who picks on her because she is a geek, she makes Harriet's life horrible.

Nat has wanted to be a model since she was seven. She always takes as long as she can putting make-up on and choosing what to wear. She is very loyal to Harriet and is sticking up for her, which is shown by what she does to Alexa.

Toby is a character in the book who is also a geek and he's Harriet’s stalker. He follows her everywhere and sometimes seems to know more than Harriet about what is happening in her life.

My favourite characters, other that Harriet, are Harriet’s dad and Wilbur from Infinity Models, who are both very funny. I found this book fun to read and I was laughing out loud in some places. I was also eager to read the next chapter. I would recommend this for girls who are just starting high school.
