Sea Weekend Book Review: Racing the Sun by Karina Halle

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

After months of backpacking Amber is stranded in Italy. She doesn't have enough money for the plane ticket home, so she has to find a job. She finds a position as a teacher of a boy and a girl. They are twins and she's supposed to teach them English. They're living on Capri together with their older brother and housekeeper. Amber is hired before she can even say yes. She's supposed to stay at the villa. The job sounds ideal on paper, but in reality it's much more difficult. The twins are a challenge. Ever since their parents died they try to chase everyone away. Their brother Derio spends whole days in his office and hardly says a word.

Amber is determined to give the job a serious try. She feels bad for Derio because he's lost so much. Slowly they're starting to get used to each other and he willingly spends time with her. Amber likes him, a lot actually. The twins are still out of control, but after learning the hard way that their actions have consequences they're giving Amber a serious chance. Which is a blessing as soon her job description changes from teacher to nanny. Her relationship with Derio keeps improving as well. Will her arrival at their home be a blessing for this family and what happens when Amber's supposed to go home?

Racing the Sun is a story about an American girl who starts to work for an Italian family. Amber wanted to travel to find herself, to find out what she really wants in life. Because of the job and the responsibility that comes with it she discovers that she's capable of so much more than she initially thought. Her insecurities are never completely gone, but she's getting more confident while caring for the twins. I loved to see her grow and to see her come out of her shell. She learns to stand up for herself and to like herself a lot more.

Derio is a broken man and he's living a life in solitude. At first he hardly even talks to Amber, but she doesn't give up on him. I felt so bad for him and found him endearing. He's a sweet guy who has many problems. Instead of running away from them Amber helps him to face them. They're a wonderful match and I loved the chemistry between these two gorgeous people. The love scenes are fantastic and Karina Halle has done such a good job making them both meaningful and beautiful. I really enjoyed reading this amazing and wonderful love story. It was fun to learn more about Capri, I immediately wanted to pack my bags to explore the island. I highly recommend Racing the Sun, it's a fantastic summer story.

Sea Weekend Book Review: Beyond the Sea by Melissa Bailey

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Freya has lost her husband and son. Their boat has been found empty, so they probably died at sea. She's heartbroken and she's a mess. After a while she returns to their cottage on a remote island, which is next to a lighthouse. There she finds her son's diary. She starts to retrace his last days. She also receives an envelope with letters from centuries ago that have been found by her son. They are about myths and every day life at sea. The diary and letters are giving her a little bit of purpose.

Slowly Freya is starting to find herself again. The hurt will never go away, but she manages to be able to think a bit more clearly from time to time. She discovers something beautiful among her son's things and even though she receives a warning about the danger of this mythical item she decides to keep it and treasure it as it brings her son a little closer. She goes through various stages of grief, but she isn't the only one who's hurt. A remote island is a dangerous place to be when someone means you harm...

Beyond the Sea is a beautiful story about love and loss. Freya has lost the two people who were the most dear to her, her husband and son. She has disturbing dreams about them and about their last day. Every time she unravels a bit of what must have happened to them. The question is if it brings more problems or if it only brings her acceptance. I love how Melissa Bailey dealt with this sensitive topic. She beautifully describes the grief. It's raw, honest and lonely. While it's overwhelming for Freya I felt like it never became too much for me as a reader.

I liked the myths that surround the islands. It was great to read about tales of mermaids and I loved reading the letters that Freya's son found at sea. The sea plays a big role in this book, both in mythical sense and in reality. It's never entirely clear where one ends and the other begins. It's fascinating, I was gripped, enthralled and moved. I couldn't stop reading. Fortunately Melissa Bailey knows how to write and the story keeps its high quality from beginning to end. The finale is really strong and unexpected. I highly recommend this book, it's really, really good.

Sea Weekend: About Me - The Dunes

When people ask me if I'm a mountain person or a sea person I always tell them I'm a mountain person. As there are no mountains in the Netherlands the sea is the next best thing. I love it, especially the dunes. They're beautiful and I like spending time there. During the summer the beaches are often crowded and that is when I like living here the least. When most of the tourists are gone it's time for me to enjoy my surroundings again. I love the autumn. The colors are stunning and I often go for a walk when the weather is a bit cooler, but not too cold yet. I can't wait for my favorite season to start.

There's a huge protected dune area here. You can only enter by buying a ticket. I love the peace and quiet, the animals and the beauty of nature. It's what I like best about living here. It's just five minutes from my home and I can't go there often enough. It's dune life at its best. It's almost like living in the mountains, the closest I can get.

I'm not someone who sunbathes, I don't have the patience for it. I easily get bored when I'm doing the same thing for many hours in a row, even if I bring a book. It's something you'd never see me do. Fortunately there are many other ways to enjoy the beach as well. I discovered how many wonderful things it has to offer when I moved here. Before that I mainly thought about the part where you lie down on a towel and not much else. I started to truly appreciate it when I experienced them and I consider myself lucky that I'm able to.

Beaches are wonderful. They are always different, they are filled with life. Even if they're quiet, the sea keeps moving. It's one of nature's most beautiful and scariest things. In the Netherlands the water is usually quite calm, but we do have a lot of storms here. When I'm snuggled up inside under a blanket while reading a book I totally appreciate the sea. It even offers comfort when I know I'm near it, but can't see it. It's an every day presence in my life, one that makes me calm and happy.

Sea Week Fabulous Freebie: Maid for Love by Marie Force

Maddie Chester is determined to leave her hometown of Gansett Island, a place that has brought her only bad memories and ugly rumors. Then she's knocked off her bike on the way to her housekeeping job at McCarthy's Resort Hotel by Gansett's "favorite son," Mac McCarthy. He's back in town to help his father with preparations to sell the family resort and has no intention of staying long. When Mac accidentally sends Maddie flying over the handlebars, badly injuring her, he moves in to nurse her back to health and help care for her young son. He soon realizes his plans for a hit-and-run visit to the island are in serious jeopardy, and he just may be "maid" for love.

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Anniek:

Maddie is probably one of the sweetest girls on Gansett Island, but people haven't been kind to her. Her body developed early and this didn't go unnoticed with the boys at school. One foul rumor and gossip have given her a bad reputation. The fact that her mom is in jail and that her father walked out on his family isn't helping much either. Maddie struggles to keep her job to take care of her 9 month old baby boy. Being a single mom is not easy but she refuses to contact his father. He lied to her and took advantage of her innocence, leaving her with only a text message.

Mac is one of the prodigy sons of the McCarthy family. His family is wealthy and owns a huge family resort on the Island. Mac is successful and lives in Miami. When a panic attack drives him back to his family he has no idea that his whole life is about to change. It is his fault that he and Maddie get into an accident together. She is hurt pretty badly and can't take care of her son and her job without help. One look at her is all it takes for him to fall in love with her.

Can Mac and Maddie overcome the evil rumors that have ruined Maddie's life? Will his mother succeed in driving them apart, because she is less than pleased to watch her son fall in love with the Island tramp?

Maid for Love made me feel different things. I was shocked to read what a lie and gossip can do to a person, how Maddie is seen through the eyes of the Island people. It filled me with pride that she is so strong. She chooses to face everything head on instead of hiding away in her house which I wouldn't blame her for. Because of Mac she finally gets the love and friends that she deserves.

I love the way the Marie Force writes and how she manages to create a heartwarming story. I will make sure I'll have the rest of the books in this series as soon as possible. It's no surprise to me that this series is on the bestselling list. You will want to read this book without interruptions. So get comfortable and get this book for free now on Amazon. See where it all begins!

All of the McCarthy's of Gansett Island books can be read as stand alones as well.
