My Precious Library

Working in a library can be stressful, but it can also be a lot of fun. I love it when I can read to children, but when there are inspections and budget cuttings things are looking rather grim. We're doing everything to be as inviting as we can be. There are still people who love books. When I think about the library I'm always reminded of my childhood. It was so much fun to choose new books. As my parents sometimes needed a while before they found what they were looking for I spent a lot of time reading at one of the tables. One book that triggers a memory in particular is Roald Dahl's James and the Giant Peach. I read three quarters of the book and had to leave it behind, because I wouldn't have enough books for the rest of the week if I'd borrow it. The next week it was gone, and the next. I never found out the ending. I still regret that, so maybe I should finally pick up the book again to find out.
Seeing all those rows of books is still my favorite part of the job. I'm working in a modern library, but when I enter and see the shelves I'm being transported to a different time. Every morning there's a moment when I'm ten years old again. Even at that age I preferred going to the library instead of the sweet shop. I love sweets, but stories are my universe, my world and my oxygen. Every day I'm grateful that there are authors who have taken the time to write the books that are making my life so much better. I can't imagine a world without my precious library.

Lavender is back!

I'm back. It's been a while since I've told you any stories about my life. When my sister's husband suddenly passed away I needed to be there for my sister. Jason came back from Australia and we've been supporting Dawn as much as we can. She's moved in with my parents, so my mother can watch the children when they get home from school. Dawn is back at work and is trying to carry on, but I can see how heartbroken and devastated she is. She didn't want to stay in the house where she built so many memories with the love of her life. I spend many nights sleeping in her room, because she doesn't want to be alone. As a family we're strong, but grief is such a mean thing. There's nothing we can do to make it go away. The same goes for her three children who have lost their father.
Besides taking care of my sister I've also been busy with Lizzy's wedding. We found her a beautiful dress and I think she's going to be the prettiest bride I've ever seen. It will still be a couple of months before they will say yes to each other as they're getting married on Valentine's Day. We've booked the venue, ordered the invitations and went dress shopping at at least ten different bridal shops. I loved all the different dresses and can't wait to get married! I need to find myself a potential husband first and that's not my strongest point. Maybe someone else should select my boyfriends from now on. My brother and Sandy want to get married as soon as possible as well, but they don't dare to tell Dawn yet. I'm so happy for them. Life can be great and unfair at the same time and having both a heavy and a light heart is such a strange feeling.
I love working together with Aislyn, she's such a sweet girl. I'm still not completely used to being someone's boss, but I'm improving. Soon I will have another staff member to guide. They've hired an intern, who's going to do some research and together we have to come up with a plan to improve our marketing strategy. Events clearly help to get more visitors and we want to organize several small things every week. It's great to come up with plans and I'm enjoying the buzz and the new attention as well.
I've been on two dates. They were all right, but nothing special. I think my musician friend Roy will be back from his world tour soon. I can't wait to see him, but I don't want to get my hopes up. We've been keeping in touch via Skype and it's been so much fun to find out more about his life and his personality. My brother has been to one of his concerts and afterwards they had a beer together. I didn't know it, but they've met before at soccer matches, so it was no coincidence they ran into each other. He would love to see us together as he thinks Roy is a great guy. I'm not sure he's ready for any commitment though. He loves his freedom. To be honest I'm quite enjoying mine as well. It's great to go out with friends and to read a book when I want to. With Calvin I stayed in too much, I love going out and my life changed into something that didn't suit me when I was with him.
Tomorrow one of my new author friends will have a talk and signing session at the bookstore on the floor below the library. I can't wait to go. Afterwards she will also come upstairs to talk about her writing and she's promised that ten aspiring writers will be allowed to attend a special master class. I bet the lines are going to be really long. Fortunately I'm the lucky person who has to supervise it. I have to make sure everything goes according to plan and when it does I can sit down and join the class.

It's nice to be back. As you can see I'm sharing a picture of myself with you. It was nice to share a face with Suzanne, but it's time to have my own. I think it's showing my best features and I love my bright green eyes. This is the real me and I'm proud of it.

Endings & Beginnings

Today I had to rush to the library after class. Normally I'm not supposed to be at work on Mondays, but Edward had an announcement to make and he wanted me to be there. Martha's going to retire soon and she'd love to stay at the library, but only part-time. She decided that she might as well take this step back a few months earlier to give a chance to someone younger. She will be taking over my Mondays until I'm done studying and Aislyn will be hired as a full-time employee from now on. I know Edward must have pulled some strings to make that happen on such a short notice.
I never had the chance to meet Aislyn before today. It's strange as she's been working at the library for months and I kept wondering what she would be like. I must have asked Zoe a thousand questions, because I was so curious. I finally had a chance to meet her and we'll be working together very soon. Edward has given me more responsibilities and she's going to be my right hand. It's scary, but I'm ready to take more initiative.
When I entered the staff room everybody was already there of course, but they waited for me. There was a beautiful chocolate cake, baked by Edward's wife Victoria, and Edward can't celebrate something without opening several bottles of champagne. As soon as he finished his speech I walked over to my new colleague and introduced myself. I finally had my chance to talk to Aislyn. She looks a bit like a fairy with her very short, almost white hair and her huge green eyes. She was a little shy at first, but after a few glasses of bubbles she started to open up a little. She has a great sense of humor and a warm and caring personality. I can't wait to get to know her better and I'm so excited we're going to work together!

Lavender's Having a Great Time

As promised, I finished helping my aunt and uncle for a little over a week at the bed and breakfast. It was hard to work while I was feeling so bad and I missed Calvin like crazy. I sent him a few texts, but he hasn't replied to any of them. I hope he's all right and even though I'm angry, I wish him all the best. I understand he wants to be with his child. What I don't get is how he could leave me behind without showing any emotion. It was like I never meant anything to him. We've spent so much time together and he didn't even seem to care a little bit about me when he broke up with me. I have so many questions, but I'll have to accept that he isn't going to answer them. I've given up and am trying to move on now.
Celia has been there for me the entire time. She let me cry on her shoulder and at the end of the week she told me to pack my Modcloth pink party dress, a bikini and my passport. We went shopping for the rest of the clothes I needed after the arrival at our destination. Celia has booked us an amazing holiday at a great cottage near the beach. We're lounging in the sunshine, there are free cocktails and the food is delicious. I love the bright blue sea and the white sand and Celia is great company. I can't believe she actually made all the arrangements for a trip to Aruba in just a few days time. I'm still stunned. It's great to be here and everything is perfect. I'm actually having fun and I'm getting a nice tan. I'm healing and am looking forward to seeing my friends and family again when I get back. I couldn't face them after Calvin's news, because I felt ashamed that another guy had dumped me. Fortunately I'm over that. It will be a while before I'll be ready to date someone, but I am starting to get back a bit of my happy, bubbly self. Celia told me this trip is a win-win situation, I needed a holiday and she was looking for a good travel companion. It seems like we've both found exactly what we wanted.

Calvin's Shocking News

I was so happy to spend time with my uncle and aunt at their bed and breakfast. I arrived on Friday at the beginning of the evening, just in time for a big barbecue. My uncle and aunt always organize one on the final evening of a course. This time there was a group who came there to learn how to paint. The mixed company amazed me. Most of the students were eccentric and they dressed accordingly. I loved all the unusual styles. I've met some great people that evening and went to bed with a smile plastered on my face.
On Saturday a new group arrived. These course members are here to learn how to write for children. It's a group of ten people. Some of them can draw and want to learn how to write stories to go with their illustrations and others want to write for older children. Of course Celia Daniels was there to welcome them. Celia's living next door and she's a successful novelist. I found out she also writes children's books under a pen name. It was great to see her again and chatting with her about books and writing is great.
I really like this group of people and I was looking forward to having a week of fun. Calvin arrived yesterday evening. I couldn't wait to see him again. I gave him a hug and wanted to take him to the living room where everyone was waiting for desert after a great meal together, but Calvin asked me if we could have a moment in private so we could talk. I didn't like the sound of that at all and immediately there was a huge lump in my throat and nerves were fluttering in my stomach. I started crying even before he delivered his news. He looked so serious and he was distant. I knew something was very wrong and I feared that he was going to break up with me.

I love Santoro!

I love Santoro, ever since I first found the Gorjuss store on Etsy years ago. It's a big and wonderful brand now with so many amazing items. Sometimes it's hard to choose from the huge range of amazing accessories. I really like Gorjuss, but am also very fond of the beautiful and romantic Mirabelle. I don't think I'm ever going to be too old to like cute and gorgeous and I hope I will get the chance to own many more Santoro items in the future.

Things that cheer me up!

 1) Bentos. I love Japanese lunch boxes, their bentos are amazing. I'm especially fond of the pink strawberry designs. A lot of Japanese people are food artists and they make the most fantastic cute food designs. I'm not very skilled at that, but putting regular lunches in a cheerful package is already a good start. This set is from ebay.

2) Fantasy art. It's something that I can keep looking at for hours and it will never bore me. I'm a big fan of Ching-Chou Kuik.

3) Beautiful mugs. I love this floral Cath Kidston range!

4) Sticker sacks and other Japanese stationery items. This one comes from Kawaii Shop Japan.

5) Amigurumis. Who wouldn't love this cute amigurumi? This beauty is from Knittingdreams on Etsy.

6) Postcards. This cutie is from Artbox and I love it!The color is gorgeous and I like the mushrooms.

Great Etsy Bookmarks!

I've selected some of my favorite Etsy bookmarks. Using a beautiful bookmark makes reading even more fun for me. I love buying something new to put between the pages of my beloved books. I'm careful with my covers and want them to look as good as new even after I've read them. In my books you won't find dog-ears, writing in the margins or highlighting. It's not that I despise these things, I just can't seem to do it. Pretty bookmarks are a great way to keep my pages neat and pristine.

1. I've got a sweet tooth. I could eat candy all day. I love traditional sweets and even though I have my favorites I try to vary in what I'm buying, because it's all so delicious and I don't want to miss anything. I like these heart shaped sweets a lot and I'm glad I'm living in the Netherlands as they make great sweets here.

2. The last thing I bought is Anna Sui berry hand cream from Asos. It's no secret that I love beauty products and I often try new things. I can't wait to find out what this Anna Sui cream is like!

3. Yesterday I bought Night Owl by M. Pierce after someone recommended it to me. I look forward to reading it! When someone tells me I should read a book I often buy it straight away. Because of this I've read a lot of great books that I would never have come across otherwise.

4. I like dark chocolate. Raw chocolate is delicious as well! I want my products to be as friendly for humans and the environment as possible. I'm all for slave free chocolate that is good for the farmers as well as for me.

My Week!

I love this cheerful Asos dress. It's perfect for the summer! I've decided it's my dress of the week. I love the combination of the two fabrics and I can never resist a nice floral garment.
It has been a busy week and because of my birthday celebrations I haven't blogged about my other days. There wasn't much to tell this week either. We postponed our Monday Night book club meeting, because it was my birthday. As Jada helped me preparing for the barn & garden party we also decided to have a Tuesday evening off. On Wednesday Calvin and I spent a lazy evening together. We drank a glass of prosecco on my balcony and talked about our relationship and how happy we are that things are going so well. On Thursday Victoria and Edward often host a party, but this week they went out for dinner together for their anniversary. Calvin and I sent them flowers and they had a lovely night. I hope we will still be together when we will be their age.
On Friday evening I went to Dawn to help her. Seth isn't doing very well. He isn't getting any better, but he's also not getting worse. Dawn tries to visit him every day and preferably with all of their children, so they can see their dad. I see they are getting used to the situation a little and slowly they're developing a new routine.
I've heard something from Stella. I was a little worried about her, because in the region where she's been stationed there have been some disturbances. She's all right though. Stella called to wish me a happy birthday and I've given her an update about Gina and how she's doing in the apartment. As far as Stella is concerned she and the twins can stay a while longer, because she won't be there for a while. They've just prolonged her stay.
I'm not used to evenings on my own and having lots of me time. I like the company of others. Calvin has spent most of the nights at my place, but he often works until late. I used my time to write and I hope some good will come of it. I'm getting more confident each day which is making me happy. I don't know if I'll ever be a great writer, but at least I'm a cheerful one.

Happy Mail Project

Sweet Fabrique
Mail makes people happy and it's very easy to write a card or a note to someone you treasure. I'm going to spend a week sending as much mail as I can to the people I love. I started yesterday with one envelope and today I've sent three things. I'm hoping to make it a very long list by the end of the week. It would be nice if you could join me and make a friend's or family member's day by sending them something sweet.

Birthday Wishes!

Made by Freepik

It's my birthday tomorrow. I love celebrating and my birthday is one of the most important events in my life for me. I've been looking forward to this day for months and I've given my birthday list to all of my friends and family in March already. It might sound strange, but for me my 29th birthday is just as magical as my 7th. I'm still that little girl who's waiting for her cake and presents. I'm a bit nervous, but I know something great is going to happen. I've never had a birthday that wasn't fun. I know that adds a bit of pressure, but I never think it isn't going to be great. What matters to me most is the company though. The guests are there for me and I'm getting their undivided attention. This year I'll even have more days of celebrating. I can't wait to write about them!

These are my latest book purchases. I can't wait to read them!

I also shopped at La Marelle again!
