French Days Book Review: The Confidant by Hélène Grémillon

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze:

It's 1975 and Camille has just lost her mother. Between her condolence mail she receives a letter from a man called Louis. He's writing a story which starts in the years just before the second World War, but Camille has no idea why he's writing to her. Louise writes about a woman called Annie, who was the love of his life ever since they were children. They were having a wonderful time, but then Annie became with someone a few years older than her called Madame M. Madame M. encourages her to paint and at first their friendship is wonderful. Madame M. has one wish and that is to have a child, but she isn't able to conceive. Annie offers to help her by carrying a child for her. Madame M. agrees with this plan, but it's the question if it's really such a wise plan...

Annie's friendship with Madame M. has never been an equal one. Madame M. is older, has seen more of the world and she's a lot richer. She's married to a good man, but they can't have any children. She and Annie come up with a plan to make a pregnancy happen, but both women haven't foreseen the consequences. Louis is telling this story to Camille, so the reader knows it has already happened, but not why he's writing to her. I found that such an interesting way to write a book. I love the idea and think the execution is amazing. Hélène Grémillon is a fantastic writer and she makes the story come to life really well.

I could feel the heartache and the despair as it was dripping from the pages, but it was never too much or too heavy. I was constantly curious and couldn't wait to find out what would happen to the two women and the baby that was so wanted. I read the story with tears in my eyes. It was gripping from the beginning and I read it in one sitting, because I couldn't put it down. I had to know how the story would end and why Louis was writing the letters. The Confidant is thrilling, fascinating and emotional. I highly recommend this book, it's unusual and very special.

French Days Beauty Spotlight & Giveaway: Suze Loves Avril

Avril is a French brand that has the mission to make organic products for women at affordable prices. They try to lower their costs as much as they can, so their products will be within reach for all women. I like that idea very much. Especially since they still manage to maintain a high quality level. That makes their brand very attractive.

I've tried their lavande-orange shower gel and it's wonderful. The scent is subtle and really nice. I love the way this product feels on my skin. I think this is a wonderful shower gel that I highly recommend. I think the quality is amazing, especially for such a good price.

Because I love Avril I'm giving away an Avril package with many lovely beauty products to one very lucky reader of my blog:

I love Meeliki Creations. The resin jewelry in this shop is beautiful.

I've purchased a lot from this seller already and it's all stunning.

I've received plenty of compliments about the jewelry.

It's well made and what I like even more is that the owner, Marie, picks the flowers herself.

On her about page Marie talks about how she makes her jewelry, it's really interesting.

I received my orders really quickly and everything looks absolutely wonderful.

Marie's jewelry reminds me of my childhood. I loved going to Provencal markets when I was on holiday and couldn't stop admiring the real flower jewelry.

The colors of Marie's jewelry are both vibrant and genuine.

I like her wearable pieces of nature very much.

Check out this fantastic store.

French Days Beauty Spotlight: Suze Loves Florame Douches de Provence Essence d'Amande

Florame is a fantastic bio brand from Saint-Rémy de Provence. The products are based on essential oils from natural origin. This Douches de Provence based on lavender, almond essence and mandarin ylang-ylang is one of my favorite shower gels. It doesn't contain any parabens or sillicones and the bottle is recyclable.

The scent of the product is delicious. The shower gel smells like macaroon and this gives me a feeling of great comfort. It's like it comes from my grandmother's kitchen. It's gentle for the skin and leaves it soft and smooth after using it. It easy to rinse as well. I love everything about it and highly recommend this product.

There are quite many Florame products and I'd like to try them all. Because of this shower gel I purchased several other beauty products to try as well. Everything is reasonably priced, which is really lovely, especially since the quality is so good. I like that Florame strives to make their products good for both the customer and the environment. I think this is a beautiful philosophy.

French Days: Suze Loves France

By Suze

The list of things I love about France is very long. I like that there's so much to see and do, that nature is beautiful, that the culture is amazing and the food is divine. Shopping in France is always fantastic. I treasure everything I bought there. I'm in love with my French clothes, my French beauty products and everything that reminds me of this wonderful country. I try to visit it as often as I can and have seen quite a lot of different areas already.

I think January is the only month I haven't spent a holiday in France and the weather and therefore unpredictable road conditions is the only reason for it. I've seen L'Alsace in September, November, December and April and enjoyed going there every single time. I went to Normandie in March, April and May, to Bretagne in May, to Le Provence in May, June and July, to Le Lot in April, June, July and September, to Le Jura in September, to L'Aveyron in April, to L'Auvergne in September, to Picardie in August, to Nord in February, March, April and August, to La Moselle in April. to Centre in June, to La Champagne in April, September and October, to Le Bourgogne in May and to Paris in March, July, August and October. There's so much to enjoy and as soon as I have the chance I'll jump in my car and go to France again.

My love for France started at an early age. I spent most of my childhood summers on a beautiful Drôme Provençale campsite called L'Or Vert. Every year I counted the days until it was time to go. I mostly enjoyed going out for a meal, visiting the amazing Provencal markets and swimming in the river near the campsite. Some of the magic of my favorite place on earth has disappeared with the arrival of huge numbers of tourists, but I will forever treasure my memories. Another regular holiday moment is Christmas in L'Alsace. It's close to the German border which means celebrating the best of both worlds. My amazing French Christmas decorations remind me of the special times I've spent there.

I have a huge wish list of places I'm still intending to visit. This year I haven't seen my beloved France at all though and I feel terribly homesick. As soon as I'm able to I'll book a gîte and pack my bags, but fortunately in the meantime I also have the chance to enjoy some of the things that France has to offer while I'm at home. I can share some of my love for this magnificent country on my blog.
