Cake, Cupcakes & Cookies Days Book Review: The Seasoning by Manon Steffan Ros

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

It's 2010 and Peggy's son Jonathan asks her to write down her life story. It started in 1937 with a piece of ginger cake. The young Peggy is afraid of her mother. She is a neglected child and her mother ignores her presence. After a horrible incident Peggy asks for help, because she can't take it any longer. Later her life is a lot happier, but she can't forget the past.

Peggy's unusual appearance and low weight are something that doesn't go unnoticed. She loves food and can never stop eating, but she's really thin. A better period starts for her when she's almost an adult and Peggy is free to go wherever she likes. As she loves her work in the village shop she stays in Llanegryn and marries the shop owner. With him Peggy can be herself, but her past keeps influencing her present...

Every person who plays an important role in her life also has a recipe to share. Food and people are always related in Peggy's world. Peggy is eccentric. Her looks are peculiar, her behavior is strange and her relationship with food isn't just one filled with love. Peggy has a darker side and slowly the truths are being revealed. They are alternated with delicious food in the form of recipes from people who love Peggy. I enjoyed that very much. It made me fall in love with this book straight away. The warmth of the people is visible through the food they like to eat.

I love the recipes in The Seasoning. They are simple with fresh ingredients and easy instructions. For me the food made the story. There's no Peggy without something to eat. The recipes made my mouth water. The deliciousness of food in combination with the difficult topic of mental illness and the consequences of living with someone who's suffering from it is a daring combination. I think it worked really well in Peggy's case and Manon Steffan Ros is such a talented author. I was glued to my seat, I couldn't stop reading. At the same time I wanted to start cooking, but I couldn't put the book away and wanted to finish the story even more. The Seasoning is a book filled with delightful contrasts, which is what I loved about it. I highly recommend this fantastic book. I can't praise it enough, it's one of those hidden gems, a book to treasure and to read again and again.

My advice is to read this book from cover to cover first and then read it again more slowly by making the recipes one by one to eat while reading their corresponding chapters. I think that would be a unique experience and it's one I'm definitely going to explore.

Cake, Cupcakes & Cookies Days Book Review: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Suze

Just before her ninth birthday Rose finds out she has a gift. She can taste people's emotions through the food they prepare. She also knows the origin of the ingredients. Because at home things aren't going very well Rose can hardly swallow her mother's cooking. Because of her gift she almost loses the pleasure of tasting great food. Together with her brother Joseph and his best friend she tries to find out more about what's happening to her. It isn't easy to tell people about it and Rose tries to avoid eating food that has been made by unhappy people as much as she can.

When she gets older Rose keeps struggling with her abilities. The situation at home also isn't much better either, they remain a not so close and together family. Her mother has found a nicer job and has met someone there who's making her a bit happier which is already a lot of progress for Rose. Her father keeps being his distant self and her brother is even worse. Joseph doesn't communicate and at times he even seems to disappear. She worries about that very much. Will she be able to lead a relatively normal life or will things get worse for Rose?

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is a beautiful story about a girl who's lost because of the unhappy situation at home and because of her ability to taste people's emotions when she eats their food. I loved the idea behind the story. Magical Realism is a genre I really like. This story is definitely not comparable to most other stories I've read and that uniqueness makes it so great in my opinion. It isn't easy if you can't eat normally and Rose is trying to find a way to make food part of her life. I loved to see her grow.

Joseph is really odd. He doesn't communicate, he's distant and he's always trying to learn something new. Rose tries to connect with him, but it doesn't work. Joseph also has to find his way in the world. He's very different from Rose. Where she is warm and caring he seems to be cold. But she finds out what his big secret is eventually and that helps to bring them together a little bit more. That was one of the best moments of the book for me. I liked this story so much because it's peculiar, which is definitely my cup of tea. Aimee Bender can write and has a great way with words. If you're a fan of the genre I highly recommend it.

Cake, Cupcakes & Cookies Weekend - Fabulous Freebie: Cupcakes, Trinkets and Other Deadly Magic

Amazon USA Amazon UK

Review by Anniek:

Jade is a young woman who owns her own bakery, Cake in a Cup. She creates the most delicious cupcakes and cookies. No wonder her bakery is packed with customers all the time. Jade is also a half-witch and believes to be half-human as well. Her mother is a free spirit who is always on the move, so Jade grew up with her grandmother Pearl and her foster-sister Sienna. Her grandmother is a very powerful witch.

When suddenly a lot more of magical beings show up Jade knows there must be something wrong. Jade thinks she doesn't have a lot of magic abilities herself, but she does know that she attracts other magic. It often seeks her out and she has the ability to find magical things. It turns out that there have been murders and that Jade's trinkets are appearing on the crime scenes. Armed with a very powerful vampire and a pack of wolves she is on the hunt to find the killer, only she never thought to look so close to home.

This book has everything that I could ever wish for. It has chocolate (combined with the most delicious cupcakes), vampires, werewolves, witches and a whole lot of magic. I could almost taste the cupcakes and would be very happy if Jade's bakery would be real. How could you not want a 'Sunshine in a Cup'? I also loved how Jade is able to stand her ground even when she's very scared. She will be a force to be reckoned with when she finds her full power.

I will definitely be reading the other books in this series. Download this freebie straight away. When you have finished this one you will, just like me, want to find out what happens next.

Cake, Cupcakes & Cookies Weekend: My Grandmother's Butter Cake

By Suze

When I think about cake and cookies I think about my grandmother. She used to love baking and she always made plenty for everyone. My absolute favorite was her Dutch butter cake. I still miss this fabulous cake sometimes. Unfortunately I can't share her recipe as I don't have it, but for me it tasted like heaven. I will never buy one in a shop or try to bake one myself, because it isn't the same. For me going to my grandmother's house was special and that was mainly because of the food and her homeliness. I was intrigued by my grandmother's recipes. She was a great cook and she was used to preparing food for plenty of people. What she made was simple, but with great ingredients and it was good.

My grandmother had a small vegetable garden and some fruit trees. Whenever we visited she had something prepared to take home with us. She loved spending her time outside working in the garden or just enjoying the sunshine on her face. My grandmother's kitchen was the heart of her house. Everyone always gathered there and most of the time all the guests were in the kitchen and the huge living room was completely empty. She liked a specific kind of tea and baked cake and cookies to go with it. I can still remember the taste of that combination.

Sometimes I miss the things that she served, but I also think it's all right that I can't recreate them. It means the memory of her food will remain untainted. I will always treasure it and will remember it fondly. I love food and am often thinking about it. A lot of my clearest memories are food related. I dream of delicious meals, it doesn't matter if they're simple or complicated, any treat is welcome and I can spend ages preparing for it. The company definitely matters as well, I like eating with others who enjoy it as much as I do. My grandmother's kitchen has certainly contributed to that passion and I'll always be grateful to her for this precious gift.

Cake, Cupcakes & Cookies Weekend Book Review: Tangled Up by Robyn Neeley

Amazon USA Amazon UK
Review by Suze

Abby's cousin Emma is famous for her Batter Up night. She has the magic to predict true love. Abby loves working with Emma, but she isn't very good at spells. Together they run a bakery, but Abby dreams about starting a catering business as well. Emma's boyfriend's best friend, Brandon, is now also living in Buttermilk Falls. He's working as a bartender while he's also trying to write a book. Abby is the person who's supposed to be his true love (predicted by Emma's batter), but whenever they are together they always seem to get tangled up, but nothing more. Abby doesn't like that at all, so she tries to make a magic cupcake that should reverse Brandon's attraction to her. Will it work and if so, is that what Abby really wants?

I loved Batter Up because of the wonderful, magical atmosphere. I like books about true love and think Robyn Neeley is giving hers a fabulous twist with the spells, the sweet small town lifestyle and the caring main characters. I really enjoyed reading about Abby and Brandon. They're both great people who aren't afraid to dream. Brandon tries to realize his and he's helping Abby to do the same. Their plans are amazing and I could picture them very well. I wish I could actually visit the bakery, the bar and the diner to experience the tastes.

It was fun to read about Buttermilk Falls and its inhabitants again. There are all kinds of events and many special occasions. Everything has a great vibe. There are plenty of good reasons for Abby and Brandon to spend time together, also after the enchanted cupcake. I like that there's some magic involved, it's just simple and a little bit, but enough to give the story that extra charm. There's also a lot of delicious cake, cupcake and other food talk which made me really want to visit the bakery. I think Tangled Up is a great successor of Batter Up and I'd definitely recommend you to read them both.
