Australia Week: Suze Loves Ineke de Vries Jewellery and Art Prints! & Giveaway

I love Ineke de Vries, a shop filled with beautiful jewelry and art.

She uses amazing ceramic beads and combines them with stones from all over the world. The result is fantastic.

Ineke is a Dutch woman who emigrated to Australia. She still visits The Netherlands regularly and I love the Dutch influences in her work.

I've asked Iris a few questions to find out more about her and her art.

What inspires you?

My work is very much inspired by my immediate environment. Since living in Australia I have made a lot of landscape paintings. I especially love coastal landscapes with rugged headlands and the mighty ocean. The Pacific Ocean is so different from the North Sea. I am still awe inpired by it.

Do you have both Dutch and Australian influences in your work and what are they?

Yes I do.I studied art at the Willem de Kooning Art Academy in Rotterdam and after emigrating to Australia studied Art at Meadow Bank Technical College (Sydney). So My art training took place in both countries. I feel that as an emigrant you are always torn between two places. I was 26 when I emigrated to Australia, so my formative years where spent in the Netherlands. And especially in the beginning I missed a lot about the Netherlands. My family of course but I also missed the Dutch landscape with its beautiful light, low horizons and endless vistas. About fifteen years ago I painted a series called Dutch Summers. It was inspired by the summer holidays I used to spend as a child sailing around Holland and visiting quaint little fishing villages. The weather was often stormy and rainy, but it felt so essentially Dutch. Needless to say that I am a great admirer of the Dutch painters especially Rembrandt and Vermeer.

How did your Etsy adventure start?

A couple of years ago during a visit to the Netherlands I was walking in Zierikzee with my mother and sister and we stumbled on this lovely jewellery shop that sold mainly gemstone jewellery. I immediately fell in love with the variety of the gemstones and the natural feel of these. In Australia I obtained an advanced diploma in ceramics and worked as a ceramic artist and hence was always fascinated by rocks and stones.
Once I discovered the beauty of gemstones I was hooked. In Brisbane I did a course in gemstone jewellery making and that was it. A friend of mine suggested that I should open a shop on Etsy and I did.

What is your favorite place in Australia?

There are lots of places I love in Australia. But I especially love Yamba, a small coastal town in Northern NSW. It is surrounded by the Yuragir National park and has the most amazing beaches I have ever been to.

Your work is a combination of stones and handmade beads, what makes them so beautiful together?

I love textures in my work. I find the combination of smooth surfaces of painted ceramic beads with the rough uneven textures of gemstones very appealing.
As I mentioned before, I am vey much inspired by the Dutch Artist Johannes Vermeer, who was famous for his use of Ultramarine in his paintings. Ultramarine is made from the gemstone Lapis Lazuli, which gave me the idea to combine some rough Lapis Lazuli Nuggets with handpainted Delft Blue beads that I bought from a Dutch Etsy Shop.

What are your plans for the future?

More of the same. Keep making jewellery and I also want to go back to some more 2D work. I am thinking of collages and prints or a combination. The possibilities are endless.

What I like about Ineke's jewelry is that she knows how to combine things. The beads and stones she uses together enhance each other's beauty.

All of Ineke's pieces are unique.

I really like the idea that nobody else will have the same necklace, bracelet or earrings, because they are one of a kind.

Ineke has a great website where you can also see her work.

I love Chloe's style. Her designs are so cheerful and vibrant.

Everything in this shop is affordable, especially the prints and the jewelry. Even a lot of the originals, which are a lot of work to make, aren't very expensive.
