Review

Katy is an insecure fifteen year old girl. Because she has nobody to talk to she writes letters to a magazine she uses as her main source of information. Misty magazine is filled with beauty tips and celebrity news. Eventually she gets her answers, but are they really very helpful? Katy's teacher Jane notices that something isn't right, but she doesn't come into action, because she has too many personal problems she doesn't want to deal with. Katy's father is too busy shouting at his wife and sometimes also daughter. Katy's mother is an alcoholic and the only thing she's interested in is drinking and he's in over his head.

Katy meets someone online she really likes. She tries to find a time to meet him. He's living in London which is where the clinic for plastic surgery is that she's been meaning to visit. Katy wants to have surgery, because she's getting rude texts from someone about her body. She's a lovely girl, but as nobody is there to tell her that she has no idea. What will happen when there's nobody to stop Katy's plans?

I think this book is a great example as there are many other Katy's in the world, wonderful girls who are vulnerable, because nobody really pays attention to them. When they meet the wrong kind of person things can spiral out of control pretty quickly. I think Margaret Montgomery has chosen a perfect topic for her novel. The story is great, it has a good flow, everything that happens, happens for a reason. It's believable and very well put together.

I loved the letters, the adverts, the snippets of information in this book. The fact that the reader gets to see Katy's story from the point of view of several of the people around her gives the reader such a good insight into the situation. It's a warning for parents and teachers who are too self absorbed or too wrapped up in their own problems to notice. I think it's fabulous that besides that warning this is a strong, great, enjoyable story as well.

Fabulous Freebie: The Look of Love by Bella Andre

Blurb

Fall in love with the Sullivans in Bella Andre's New York Times and USA Today bestselling contemporary romance series with THE LOOK OF LOVE, an emotional, fun and sexy love story.

Chloe Peterson is having a bad night. A really bad night. The large bruise on her cheek can attest to that. And when her car skids off the side of a wet country road straight into a ditch, she's convinced even the gorgeous guy who rescues her in the middle of the rain storm must be too good to be true. Or is he?

As a successful photographer who frequently travels around the world, Chase Sullivan has his pick of beautiful women, and whenever he's home in San Francisco, one of his seven siblings is usually up for causing a little fun trouble. Chase thinks his life is great just as it is--until the night he finds Chloe and her totaled car on the side of the road in Napa Valley. Not only has he never met anyone so lovely, both inside and out, but he quickly realizes she has much bigger problems than her damaged car. Soon, he is willing to move mountains to love--and protect--her, but will she let him?

Chloe vows never to make the mistake of trusting a man again. Only, with every loving look Chase gives her--and every sinfully sweet caress--as the attraction between them sparks and sizzles, she can't help but wonder if she's met the only exception. And although Chase didn't realize his life was going to change forever in an instant, amazingly, he isn't the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he's gearing up for a different fight altogether...for Chloe's heart.

Review by Anniek:

This is another fabulous freebie. It is a great story which tells us how good it is to find your one and only true love. The look of love shows us that you can be whomever you want to be without having to feel ashamed.

Chase and Chloe 'find' each other when Chloe has an accident with her car. In a hale storm Chase falls in love immediately with this gorgeous woman. He takes her to his brother's vinery so she can get some sleep and recover from her accident. He doesn't want her to leave though. He tries everything in his power to get her to stay with him. Being one of 8 children which includes 2 sisters he knows exactly what he can and cannot do or say. He is so very sweet!

Chloe has been burned by love in her past. She certainly isn't waiting for another man to fall in love with. She wants to stay in control and thinks that she can only achieve that by being on her own. However, as the days go by she cannot deny her feelings much longer.

You will all love this story and will be floating around on a pink cloud for days after! I will definitely want to know what the love stories of the other siblings will be. Luckily there are a lot of them!

Identical twins, Sinéad and Sheila Fields, have always done everything together and so, after graduating in millinery, they decide to open their own hat shop. It's a small business but thanks to hard work and talent, they build up a loyal clientele. Then one day a glamorous young actress buys one of their hats, wears it to the Baftas and suddenly success seems guaranteed.

But within weeks, tragedy strikes when Sheila disappears, and is presumed dead. After months of desolation, Sinéad is just beginning to come to terms with her loss when she is given new hope: there has been a sighting of her sister. While she is filled with excitement at the thought that Sheila might be alive, she is haunted by questions. Why would Sheila have deserted her twin without a word? After all, they had always told each other everything … hadn't they?

Sheila disappears at the moment the business she and her sister Sinéad have built is starting to become successful. Sinéad is heartbroken and she misses her sister every minute of the day. She's missing her so much that her relationship and business are starting to suffer. Her brother Max is trying to make her pull herself together. Life without Sheila is almost unimaginable, but slowly Sinéad starts to crawl out of her black hole.

Sinéad and Max hire Krystie to help with the business. She hasn't got much experience making hats, but she's an excellent designer and tailor who would love to learn the profession. Together they're building up both the business and their lives again. Only then Krystie has some shocking news, she might have seen Sheila in New York. Is that really true and what has happened to Sinéad and Max's beloved sister? Weren't they always honest with one another and wouldn't she have told her twin if something was bothering her?

I instantly fell in love with this story. It's about creativity, family secrets and love, which is a perfect combination. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Sheila. With her disappearance the whole family is falling apart, but they need each other more than ever. Krystie is such a great woman and I loved her sense of style and her character. She helped them to get things back on track and soon she becomes the glue that mends the broken family she's now a part of. That was such an amazing process to witness. I enjoyed reading this book very much and highly recommend it to anyone who loves a great Irish read.

Beauty

Beauty

I blog about things I like. This blog is positive only and I try to show the people who read my blog the beauty they can find online. After more than a year of blogging I'm still being surprised every day. I love it that there are so many talented people. They share their talent with the rest of the world which sometimes isn't an easy step to take. With beauty and talent there's often insecurity. That's why I think it's so important to tell people they are talented and to let them know how great their achievements are.
I like creating myself. I might not be the best writer or the best artist, but I'm definitely having fun when I do something. Creating can be many things, it can help you to feel better, it can be fun, it can be relaxing, it can lighten your mood, it can be a medium to channel your emotions and much, much more. It isn't always easy to show the world your most private thoughts and feelings and still there are people who are willing to do that every single day just so others can enjoy it. There's so much beauty in that. I think it's inspiring and it makes me feel grateful and blessed.
The world is so much less grey because of all the wonderful creations people have made and will keep making. It's something I hope I will never forget. It's good to feel like a child who sees something for the first time. I love it that I can still discover and be impressed. It's what makes my days. I know not everyone realises that people have worked very hard for every book, each design and every work of art. Please keep supporting them by buying their creations and by giving them compliments and telling them how much we like them, that's how we can all contribute to keeping the beauty in the world.

Review

It's 1759 bc. Jayden is part of a Mesopotamian nomadic desert tribe. She's sixteen years old and she's betrothed to Horeb. She has no choice and has to go along with the ceremony that will finalize the plans to bind her to him forever. Horeb is the son of the tribe's leader, he wants to be king and he lives like a king. All the girls in the tribe want to marry him, except Jayden. She sees right trough him and knows he has a cruel nature and an unkind heart.

When on a terrible day she meets a kind stranger she feels attracted to him straight away. He's traveling with her and she tries to fight her feelings for him as she thinks they have no future together. Jayden likes Kadesh and he is the man she wants to be with. Unfortunately the betrothal is final and Jayden's father doesn't want to give her a chance at happiness. Horeb's hunger for power is growing every day and he's showing Jayden his true, violent, nature whenever he can. Eventually she has to flee to save herself. Will she ever see Kadesh again and what will happen when she has to leave the tribe she's lived with her entire life?

Jayden loves the desert and she's happy living outside most of the time. I really enjoyed reading about the desert and her love for the life she leads. Unfortunately that life isn't meant to last and will be disrupted. The tension kept building up until it exploded. I couldn't stop reading, this book kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next. I wanted Jayden and Kadesh to have their chance together so badly. Horeb is a horrible man and his chase to bind Jayden to him kept the story interesting and absolutely thrilling.

This is the first part of a trilogy. I look forward to reading the next book very much.

Weightless by Sarah Bannan

Adamsville wasn't a place that people came to. It was a place you were from, where you were born, where you were raised, where you stayed…

Before Carolyn Lessing arrived, nothing much had ever happened in Adamsville, Alabama. Each week, at dinner tables and in the high school assembly, everyone would pray for the football team to win. Each year, the Adams High hotlist would be updated, and girls would rise and fall within its ranks. Each day, everyone lived by the unwritten rules that cheerleaders did not hang out with the swim team, seniors did not date freshmen and the blistering heat was something that should never be remarked upon. But then the new girl came.

All Carolyn's social media could reveal was that she had moved from New Jersey, she had 1075 friends – and she didn't have a relationship status. In beach photos with boys who looked like Abercrombie models she seemed beautiful, but in real life she was so much more. She was perfect.

This was all before the camera crews arrived, before it became impossible to see where rumour ended and truth began, and before the Annual Adamsville Balloon Festival, when someone swore they saw the captain of the football team with his arm around Carolyn, and cracks began to appear in the dry earth.

Review

Adamsville is a town where everything has been the same for years. Nothing happens and many generations of the same families have lived there. Adams High is a school where the popular kids are having an almost royal status. It hardly ever happens that there's a new kid in town. When Carolyn Lessing moves to Adamsville something does change all of a sudden. Carolyn is pretty, she's artistic, she's smart and she's athletic, she has it all. The guys want to date her and the girls want to be like her. She's also very nice which helps increasing her popularity.

Even though Carolyn has a great start at Adams High she's getting into trouble with Brooke Moore. She's seeing the guy Brooke's been dating. Will Carolyn be able to settle in and to find her place in her new home town? What will happen to the kind girl who stops to talk to everyone and who's so pretty and gifted, is she going to be all right?

Weightless immediately intrigued me because of the narrative. It's written in the first person plural. The story is an eye witness report from Carolyn's class mates, girls who have admired her from afar. They're in the swim-team with her, but they aren't friends. The girls know all kinds of facts, because they spy and they gossip, it's what they do. For me that made this novel stand out immediately as it's such a unique way to tell a story.

What's happened at Adams High is horrible and it's like the whole school knew, but nobody tried to prevent it. The writing is so good that it lulls you into a false sense of security, you want to know what's happened and you keep on reading. Of course that means you more or less have to become part of Adams High's cycle of gossiping and you don't even know if what you're reading has actually happened that way, if it's reliable. I loved how the author has given the reader a role in the story, like a bystander, a listener. Someone else who now knows, of course only from hearsay, who didn't do anything. The story is being told with a startling lack of emotion, of compassion, of guilt, which made me think about both what happened to Carolyn and who have been watching her and following her. It's like reading two stories at the same time. I think it's an amazing achievement from the author that she's done this so perfectly.

The story itself repulsed me, but it's also so beautiful, because of the writing, the amazing talent of the author. I can't praise this novel enough, I think it's extremely clever and the result is something unique and excellent.

Sixteen-year-old Lara finds her soulmate. There’s just one problem – he’s her teacher.

Lara’s life is far from perfect, but being an upbeat kind of person she saves her venting for her diary. It’s the only place she can let out her true feelings about the family dramas and hideous bullying she has to face every day.

And then a shining light comes out of the darkness – the new young and MALE teacher, Mr Jagger. The one person who takes Lara seriously and notices her potential. The one person who is kind to her. The one person who she falls madly and hopelessly in love with. The one person who cannot love her back … can he?

Lara's having a terrible time at school. She has no friends and everybody hates her. Even her best friend has abandoned her so she could be more popular. Both the girls from her school and the boys from the school nearby are making Lara’s life a living hell. Lara is a beautiful and smart girl who has a lot of potential. At home she can’t talk about her problems, because her parents are spending every penny they have on fees for Lara’s education. Because she has to express herself somehow she’s writing down everything that’s happening to her in her diary.

Lara’s life changes when a new teacher has been assigned to her school. His name is Mr Jagger and he’s gorgeous. He’s in his early twenties and all the girls at school are falling for him. He’s noticing something isn’t right in Lara’s life straight away and he’s trying to include her in afterschool activities, so he can get to know her better. Lara falls head over heels for her teacher, but he's her teacher so he can’t love her back. While the bullying is getting worse, Lara’s relationship with Mr J is becoming closer. Will Lara and the teacher she loves so much have a chance together?

Me and Mr J is a book that covers a serious topic, bullying. I think the author has written about it in an honest, raw and beautiful way. Sometimes the story made me cry, because it was so real and so intense. I love it when a book can make me feel something so deeply. Lara is such a fabulous girl and it’s horrible that nobody at school can see that. Mr J is her teacher, but he’s so much more. A relationship between a high school student and a teacher isn’t right, but because Lara doesn’t have much happiness in her life I wanted nothing more than for her to feel good about herself for a change.

A student teacher relationship isn’t an easy topic to write about, it’s quite delicate. I think Rachel McIntyre has written about it in such a sensitive way. I’m impressed with how she handles it. She lets her readers feel so many conflicting emotions. The ending is really good and it made me see the story in a different light once again. I liked the effect the author creates with it. This isn’t an easy read and it’s definitely a book that will make the reader think, I think it’s brilliant.

So ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ has never been top of Megan’s festive playlist. But for Skye, she knows she needs to spend the holiday season with the people she’s left behind. She can do this. Even if the thought of meeting Lucas under the mistletoe still has her feeling like she’s drunk one-too-many Snowballs!

Megan's daughter Skye is the most important person in her life. She loves her very much and wants what's best for her. They have a strong bond and are good friends. Skye is a great kid, she's unbelievably bright and she's good company. Megan's aunt has been there for them ever since Skye was a baby. Unfortunately Megan's parent's weren't that supportive and she hasn't seen them ever since she told them she was pregnant. Her mother had big plans for her and Megan had to make them happen whatever the costs. The only good thing in her life was her boyfriend Lucas and Megan also hasn't seen him since she left her home town before Skye was born.

Megan's parents have invited her for Christmas. After many years without contact she now has to visit her family again. It means that she can't escape her past any longer. She keeps running into Lucas and even though she tries not to care about him, it's difficult. Skye loves spending time with her grandparents and with Lucas, so for her Megan has to be strong and face the people she's so carefully avoided. Will she be able to survive this Christmas at home?

Driving Home for Christmas is a story about a woman who has a difficult past. Megan has a lot of bad memories to deal with. There were also some good times and they were mostly with Lucas. Even though Christmas is part of this novel it's also a story that can be read throughout the year as it isn't only about the holidays. Megan's history is much more important. I enjoyed reading this book very much and I think it's really good. I think A.L. Michael has written a wonderful story and I'm happy I had the chance to read it.

Lavender Loves Tiny Bee Cards! & Giveaway

I love Tiny Bee Cards. It's such a funky shop and the cards are really great.

I like the bright colors and the fun texts, especially the puns are fabulous and I admire the playfulness with words.

There are cards for every occasion and if you purchase from this shop you have something unique and different to send.

I like the simple and cute drawings and actually found Tiny Bee Cards while looking for something kawaii.

I've asked the owner of the shop, Alexis, a few questions, so you can find out more about her and her fabulous cards.

How do you make these cards?

I create the illustrations with Adobe Illustrator, and I try to simplify a concept down to its most basic shapes. It’s similar to the process of logo design, and as a graphic designer this process is a fun puzzle for me.

 What inspires you?

I love making greeting cards because I love that they’re making someone smile somewhere. Getting a special card is such a delight, so I'm so happy if I can create that for others! I create cards especially for the chance to brighten someone's day.
Another thing that inspires me is the English language. A lot of my cards and prints are based on puns, so throughout the day naturally I read and hear a lot of words, so that often inspires a new card. Plus, ever since I’ve started my shop, people are often coming up with cool ideas and suggesting them to me, which is fun for me.
I also love animals so they are constantly inspiring new card ideas as well, and they are fun to draw.

How did your Etsy adventure start?

I started TinyBeeCards almost a year ago, and it started with one card that I designed to give to my husband on Valentine's day. It was the ‘significant otter’ one. He loved it, and he suggested that I start an Etsy shop just for cards in a similar style. So I did!

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to keep creating, experimenting, and working on my shop. It’s so rewarding and I feel so lucky being able to draw things all day, so I plan to keep it up.

Is there a fun fact you could share with my readers?

I couldn’t do it without the help of my two cats, who provide constant support, quality control, and some constructive criticism.

Alexis also makes beautiful art, you can find it here.

I like the idea of putting a smile on someone's face which is why I find these cards so attractive.

Alexis has a beautiful website where you can find out more information about her and her designs.

Besides postcards you can also find a few adorable magnets in the shop.

One lucky reader of my blog will receive a wonderful prize.

Alexis will send three postcards of choice to the person who wins this giveaway. Good luck!

I will contact the winner on twitter or via email. If I don't get a reply within 60 hours the prize will go to someone else. All of my giveaways are international.
Please don't cheat. For every prize that's being offered to you someone has worked very hard. I won't send prizes to people who are not playing fair.
It can take a long time for mail to arrive in the Middle East, some parts of Australia and South America. I will ship to every country, but I can't make the mail go any faster.
