About Traci Jo Stotts
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. Always one to daydream, I’m often teased for the many bits and pieces of paper with notes and ideas for different books littering my desk. After spending most of my life in rural Nevada, I’ve recently moved to Washington.
To my husband and sons…I finished!
Why book covers are so important
I really didn’t have any visions of what the cover for From Shattered Pieces would look like. I purposely ignored that part of the process. I filled out the cover worksheet and daydreamed about how I was going to feel when I saw it. Once I knew it was on its way, I was giddy with excitement.
The e-mail came with cover art in the subject line. I knew this was too important to open on my phone so I powered up my laptop and sat, anxiously waiting. I clicked the attachment and that feeling I was anticipating wasn’t there. The cover was beautiful. I loved the font and the shattered pieces flying this way and that. The model on the cover just didn’t reflect the story. Ian, the main character in FSP, is a tomboy and the model was pretty glamorous. It was almost too beautiful.
This being my first experience, I wasn’t sure how to voice my concerns. The artists have a worksheet with limited information to go by. I am sure it’s not a dig at the artist’s work to say it’s too beautiful, but it was hard to speak up nevertheless.
I asked for something a little different (with not a moment to spare), and was lucky enough to be able to look for an image that better reflected the overall feel of Ian’s story.
Again, I pushed away any images that tried to creep into my mind. I knew the cover artist was more than capable of delivering a fabulous cover, and boy, did she ever! The moment I opened the second attachment, I felt it. “THIS IS IT! THIS IS HER! THIS IS IAN’S STORY!” I couldn’t stop staring at it!
I’m in love with the artwork for From Shattered Pieces and I’m so thankful to have worked with such an amazing artist! It was important for me to love the cover. It’s the first connection reader’s have with the story. So, I disagree with the old saying Don’t judge a book by its cover. For me, it’s the first impression and when I look at the cover of From Shattered Pieces… I’m impressed!

Ian had no intention of running away. She lived with her abusive parents for sixteen years, so surely she could endure two more. But something changed the night she fought back.
Leaving home was one thing but being on the streets of Reno brings scary to a whole new level. A chance run-in with Jubal proves to be both a blessing and a curse.
Now, Ian must come to terms with who she is and what she must do to survive.

Thank you!!!
DeleteSeriously Fantastic Cover!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great read.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree on the importance of a good book cover. Let's face it, it's the first thing that draws us in and you could have written the most amazing novel, if the wrapping is badly designed, chances are it simply won't get the attention it deserves. In your case, Traci, I can't say anything about the content as I haven't read it (yet), but the cover sure rocks!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait, sounds great x
ReplyDeleteThe story sounds interesting, but scary for the character.
ReplyDeleteI love the cover. I think covers are a big part of whether or not I decide to read a book, they need to catch the reader's eye and draw them in.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the hunt for a particular book at the moment which is published by several different publishing houses so has various cover photos. I'll pick the one that I think suits the book, the writing style and will also look good on my (heaving) bookshelves.
ReplyDeleteI love the book cover, and the story seem very interesting.
ReplyDeleteOh looks like an interesting story line. And I loved this post about the artwork.
ReplyDeleteThe cover is quite good. The blurb is mind catching which increases my curiousity.
ReplyDeleteooh seems very interesting :)
ReplyDeleteThat's nice to hear, I'm always intrigued by the cover selecting process. I'm curious to know what happens when you don't like a cover that is made for your book, do you still have to use it?
ReplyDeleteFrom Shattered Pieces is something that I feel like will shatter my heart. I'm reading the Amazon preview right now.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the hardest thing about writing this book?
ReplyDeleteWriting FSP wasn't hard but typing THE END was painful. These characters are a part of me - I didn't want to leave them.
DeleteLooks like a fab story, where did you come up with the plot, and was it an ongoing process of change and alteration?
ReplyDeleteOnce the scenes are in my head it rolls right along. Not many changes to the storyline but lots of editing! =]
DeleteThe cover looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt brought tears to my eyes. I am in love with the cover!!
DeleteSounds great! I love the desription of the story and that it is YA read.

ReplyDeleteIan (for a girl) & Jubal are unusual names - what inspired them?
ReplyDeleteIan is short for Vivian. I heard the name Jubal on the radio and I loved it for this character.
DeleteThanks for the question =D
I was wondering how long it took to write FROM SHATTERED PIECES?
ReplyDeletetwinkle at optonline dot net
Maybe seven months. I didn't write consistently.
DeleteI think covers can make or break a person looking at a book. I have read books and looked at the cover and it didn't even come close to the story. I joke I am a cover-girl, if it grabs me, I will then read the blurb.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new release! I like to see the cover actually match what the character is supposed to look like. Sadly I've read books where the cover has nothing to do with the book.
ReplyDeleteWow that book sounds powerful and emotional! I can wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteBook seems amazing would love to read it.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great book. I really like the cover. I am drawn to a book by the cover at times. Thanks for the giveaway.

ReplyDeleteLuckily for the superrich (some of you, probably) and anyone who loves to gawk at them (me), plenty of replica oakley sunglasses online retailers are trying to provide an answer to the question of what you give to someone who already has everything. That results in a lot of beautiful, mind-bendingly expensive things, but it also provides the occasional point of unintended hilarity and self-parody that happens when anything, including wealth, is taken to its logical extreme. Below, I've scoured luxury hermes replica gift suggestions all over the internet to find a dozen that personally made me snort. These earrings, like many earrings this bag, are clip-ons, and just thinking about a Honda Civic slipping off one of my ears at a party, never to be seen again, is giving me wild anxiety. Technically the front panel color of this ray ban outlet sunglasses and bag is called Rose Shocking, but personally, I think it would be more accurate and also funnier if Hermès renamed it Extremely F'ing Pink. In recent years, I've relied on basic training plans available on the web, but nothing satisfied my needs. While most of these programs would provide a weekly workout schedule, few offered actual coaching. That's why I was intrigued when I heard about Oakley's new workout sunglasses. The Oakley Radar Pace offers real-time coaching and feedback during your runs and bike rides, via audio cues over embedded Bluetooth headphones. The software can even create a weekly training plan that is tailored to you and your oakley replica athletic ability. This isn't something that will replace your Fitbit. There's no step tracking and you wouldn't wear them throughout the day. These are used specifically to track running and cycling. And I really liked what it offered.
