Interview

1) Your newest novel has a big handbag theme. Which bag would you absolutely take with you to a holiday party?

I have a gorgeous black beaded clutch that goes well with the LBD – little black dress – that I usually pull out forholiday parties. I bought the clutch as a gift for myself when I got married and also purchased one for the three friends who threw a bridal shower for me. It always brings fond memories.

2) What’s your best festive memory?

I have two wonderful holiday memories to share. The first is centered around Channukah. My great Aunt Martha, one of my all-time favorite relatives, was an amazing woman – funny, generous, boisterous and a fabulous cook. She would make the most amazing latkes, which are potato pancakes you eat during Channukah. (They are cooked in oil, as the holiday celebrates some oil in an important light that burned for 8 days when it should have only lasted for one.) Her latkes were a taste of heaven. The whole extended family would gather around a plate and she would drop them onto the paper towels to soak up the oil and cool. But we would grab them, hot from the plate as soon as she put them down. We’d be juggling the latkes between our hands and blowing on them to cool off, burning our fingers as we did. But no one wanted to risk letting the latkes cool on the plate. If you didn’t grab one right away, someone else would. I think of her every day and especially during the holidays.

Even though I grew up in a Jewish household, one of my dearest friends since kindergarten celebrated Christmas and welcomed me into her family celebrations. She would invite me over every year to help her family trim her Christmas tree. Now that we are adults with families of our own, we still celebrate together. My family joins hers for Christmas brunch annually.

3) What’s your favorite festive food?

See question #3 – Latkes!

4) What is your favorite winter movie?

“Love Actually” is my favorite winter movie. I don’t think there’s another movie out there that can have me laughing and crying at the same time. When Laura Linney’s character forgoes the chance at love to care for her sick brother, it’s like a punch to the gut. And I can’t help but sob when Emma Thompson’s character, realizing her husband is having an affair, puts on a brave face for the sake of her kids.

But then porn stars fall in love and Hugh Grant dances through 10 Downing Street, and I’m rolling on the floor laughing.

5) If you could invite one special guest (dead or alive) to a party who would it be and why?

I would absolutely invite Jon Stewart. I think he is brilliant, clever and funny as hell. He would certainly be the life of the party and if he wanted to whisk me away for the weekend after, I wouldn’t complain.

  4. Never had latkes. They sound good. Funny how we keep our food traditions as we get older.

  5. Oddly enough my favorite ‘Christmas drink’ was chocolate milk. My mom was the mean mom who only bought treats, including chocolate milk, for special occasions. Every Christmas my sister and I would have a glass with our huge Christmas morning breakfast including delicious hashbrown casserole, another favorite we only seemed to get at Christmas.

  10. WORSE CHRISTMAS PRESENT? My sister gave me NOTHING one year. I had to sit and watch everyone else open their presents and I didn't get anything. Decided the day after Boxing Day to get me a calendar in the sales - unfortunately she didn't want buy me that either, as she bought me a calendar of the wrong football team. Supported the same one for nearly 30 years and she knows that. :(
