Leon Day: The Reluctant Elf by Michele Gorman

Meet Britain's Worst Innkeeper

Single mother and extremely undomestic goddess, Lottie, has five days to become the ultimate B&B hostess to save her beloved Aunt Kate’s livelihood.

When Aunt Kate ends up in the hospital, Lottie and her seven-year-old daughter are called to rural Wales to stand in at the B&B. Without the faintest idea how to run a hotel (she can barely run her own life), Lottie must impress the picky hotel reviewer and his dysfunctional family who are coming to stay over Christmas. Without the rating only he can bestow, Aunt Kate will lose her livelihood.

But will Danny, the local taxi driver who she hires to help her, really be Santa’s little helper, or the Grinch who stole Christmas?

Lottie's aunt Kate has had an accident. Lottie and her seven year old daughter Mabel were supposed to spend their Christmas holiday with Kate at her bed and breakfast. An important guest has booked a Christmas stay and it's too late to cancel the booking. He has to give the place a rating, so he's an important guest. Lottie has never seen the bed and breakfast and unfortunately it isn't quite what she expected it to be. The house is a mess and Lottie isn't used to cooking and cleaning. In London she employs someone for that and in Wales she tries to find help too, because she can't pull this off on her own.

With the help of taxi driver and artist Danny she does some last minute fixing up. She offers Danny quite a bit of money to help them get through the entire Christmas. The guests aren't easy, the reviewer has brought his demanding family. He has a brother in law with wandering hands and lips, who doesn't care much for his wife who doesn't like anything and who always has a headache. They have twins who are a disaster. They're all messy and they turn the house upside down. Will Lottie and Danny be able to save both Christmas and the rating? Will they end up friends or will they hate each other at the end of such a difficult holiday?

The Reluctant Elf is a fun Christmas story. Lottie is pretty clueless when it comes to running a bed and breakfast, but she tries to make the best of it and she manages to solve a lot of problems with a little bit of creativity. There were some funny scenes and there's also a bit of wonderful romance. I think Michele Gorman has written a great Christmas story, it has warmth and it's festive. It has everything I like about Christmas books.

  1. This sounds so cute! I stockpile Christmas read all year long and then binge on them starting in the fall. Thank you for the proper introduction.
