Australia Week: Captivate by Vanessa Garden

In a glittering underwater world, nothing is as it seems...

For the past twelve months since her parents’ death, seventeen-year-old Miranda Sun has harboured a dark secret — a secret that has strained the close relationship she once shared with her older sister, Lauren. In an effort to repair this broken bond, Miranda’s grandparents whisk the siblings away on a secluded beach holiday. But before Miranda gets a chance to confess her life-changing secret, she’s dragged underwater by a mysterious stranger while taking a midnight swim.

Awakening days later, Miranda discovers that she’s being held captive in a dazzling underwater city by an arrogant young man named Marko…the King of this underwater civilisation!

Nineteen-year-old Marko intends to marry Miranda in order to keep his crown from falling into the sinister clutches of his half-brother, Damir. There’s only one problem: Miranda is desperate to return home to right things with her sister and she wants nothing to do with Marko. Trying to secure her freedom, Miranda quickly forms an alliance with Robbie — Marko’s personal guard. However, she soon discovers that even underwater, people are hiding dangerous secrets…

Miranda has stopped talking to her sister. Ever since her parents died she's been carrying a lot of guilt and she has a terrible secret. Because Miranda and her sister Lauren aren't talking any longer their grandparents are taking them to their favorite beach hoping to give the girls a break. When they go swimming at night something drags Miranda under water. She tries to fight it, but she can't. Then everything turns black and when she wakes up she's somewhere she's never been before.

Miranda is being held captive by Marco. Marco needs a queen who can give him a heir, but all the women in his kingdom are barren. He wants Miranda to marry him and to be the mother of his children. Marco's kingdom is a stunning underwater world and even though Miranda can see the beauty she wants to go home. She misses her sister very much. There's no chance Marco will let her go though. He makes sure his most trusted guard Robbie is taking care of her. Having no children in the kingdom isn't Marco's only problem. His brother Damir wants to take over the kingdom and Miranda...

Miranda is being held by Marco, but he isn't a cruel man. There are things about him that she likes. He tries to convince her that he isn't all bad. Sometimes Miranda even likes her stay in the kingdom, which frightens her. Who are the people she has to deal with on a daily basis and what are they hiding? There are very few people Miranda can trust, so she desperately needs Robbie's company. Fortunately Robbie is always there for her. She tries to convince him to take her home, but he's Marco's best friend and doesn't want to betray him. Robbie's loyalty is being tested, what will he do?

Underwater stories always fascinate me and fortunately this is a really good one. I liked the world building very much. The main characters are all interesting. Miranda is insecure about herself because her sister is perfect. She has to learn to be happy with herself and her stay in the kingdom isn't only negative. Robbie and Marco are both great guys who are living in a twisted world and I couldn't wait to see how their relationships with Miranda would develop. I really liked this book and can't wait to read the next part of the series.
