Collins Custom Crafts is my Etsy Seller of the Week! & Giveaway

Collins Custom Crafts is my Etsy Seller of the Week. I love this shop because of the unusual and unique jewelry. Every item is hand painted and one of a kind. The owner of the shop, Brandie, makes little works of art that are really pretty.

I interviewed Brandie and I love her replies!

How when and where have you learned your craft?

I am really big into nail art and I am an active member of multiple Facebook communities. I first saw nail polish jewelry from members in that group. I saw the things that were done and thought that I could take it a step further -- instead of just lovely colors, I could make pieces with designs in them. I read some online tutorials, asked questions of a few people, and for the rest I just used a LOT of trial and error. I could already do the nail polish art - I just needed to get that translate into beautiful jewelry pieces.

My jewelry making first started as an idea for Christmas gifts for my family last year. I was eager to give nail polish jewelry a go and making gifts was a valid excuse to try it. I instantly fell in love with the creative process behind it and knew that I wanted to keep making jewelry. So that's when I decided that I would need to start selling the jewelry to justify all the things I wanted to create. Making the jewelry is as addictive to me as nail art itself! I have also spent an INSANE amount of money on nail polish and art supplies over the past couple years, and this gives me more ways to use all my pretty things.

What inspires you?

I gather most of my inspiration by simply browsing through all my nail art supplies. On any given day I sit down and create designs that seem appealing to me at that time. I am also inspired by manicures -- both my own and those that I constantly see online. Sometimes I'll make jewelry to match a manicure, and sometimes I'll make a manicure to match a piece of jewelry.

Could you tell me a bit more about your shop?

I opened up my Etsy shop for nail polish jewelry at the end of December last year. This was shortly after ChristmasEtsy was the first thing that popped in my head when I thought of selling homemade goods online. It is, after all, THE place to go for this kind of stuff. There really was no other choice in mind for me. I did some research to validate my decision, then jumped in and got started on my shop! I very recently (4 days ago) opened a second venue: a Storenvy shop. I don't know how that's going to turn out in the end, so we will see. I do not foresee replacing my Etsy shop with Storenvy.

Your shop is listed as a family business, how does that work?

There are few family components to this business. My husband practices carpentry as a side business and is really good at building stuff. He can build just about anything I ask for. We would like for him to sell as well, but have not yet decided on a type of product. In the meantime he's done a lot of work for the craft fair side of the business -- he custom built all the displays that we use for the craft fairs. Other crafters often ask who built our displays -- so maybe he can look into creating custom displays.

My daughters (Amber, 13 and Alexia, 11) are very much into nail art and I have been working on teaching them to create jewelry pieces. They have a long way to go until their items show up in the Etsy shop, but one day they will! Even my son (Tristan, 5) loves nail art, so maybe one day he can work on creating jewelry. Or perhaps he can help daddy build stuff.

Could you share something more about yourself with my readers?

Three weeks ago I gave birth to baby number four. His name is Dexter and he was born weighing only 4 lbs 12 ounces -- even though I was a week past my due date! He had many problems when he was born and spent 8 days in the NICU. So that has been my life for the past 3 weeks. I opted out of any fall crafts shows due to the timing of the pregnancy and due date. Unfortunately those are the shows that tend to bring in the good sales. So I'm trying to get my shop extra ready for Christmas to make up for the lack of sales but can only do so much work at a time right now. So things are more than a little hectic around here, but we are hanging on!

I think Brandie has a good eye for color. She chooses the exact right combinations. The idea of making nail art jewelry is great. It's all so tiny and precise.

Brandie has generously offered a wonderful prize to one of my readers. The winner of this giveaway will receive a piece of jewelry of their choice from Collins Custom Crafts. Enter the rafflecopter below and good luck!

I will announce the winner on twitter or via email. If I don't get a reply within 60 hours the prize will go to someone else. This giveaway is international.

  7. I can make almost anything you want, in any setting that you want. Some things work better in different settings, but that is all something I can discuss with you before beginning your piece. The best thing to do is go to my Etsy page and request a custom order (Left hand side). That will open a conversation with me and we can get started. There is no payment required until the piece is finished and we know that you like it. I love creating custom pieces and look forward to hearing from you!
