Circle of Death by Keri Arthur

In one vicious night, Kirby Brown’s world is torn apart. Her best friend is dead - killed by a madman who is now after Kirby - and she has no idea why. Doyle Fitzgerald has been sent to Melbourne to hunt down the killer but what he doesn’t expect to find is a circle of witches, and a sorceress determined to take that power for herself. And he certainly isn’t expecting to play bodyguard to a woman who is more than she seems.

But while inexplicably drawn to Doyle, Kirby fears trusting him because of the magic that lies in his soul. Because Doyle isn’t the only one with power - Kirby’s magic is capable of destroying the world.

Kirby's best friend Helen has been killed and Kirby is on the run from the killer. Doyle is working on the case, he needs Kirby's help to find out who committed this murder and several other ones. The answer lies in Kirby's past and in her powers. Kirby doesn't trust anyone, but she needs to rely on Doyle and herself to stop the killer.
Kirby doesn't count on ever falling in love. She doesn't let anyone in, while she badly needs to be loved. Helen is her whole world, but when she's taken away from her, Kirby needs to learn how to survive on her own. I liked Kirby, she's vulnerable, but strong and she has a lot of power. Doyle knows she is the one from the moment he meets her, but it takes a lot of time to even convince her not to run away from him. Will he be able to win her over? I liked the attraction between the two. Bit by bit the reasons for the murders are being unravelled. The story was fast paced with a lot of action. There were some nasty monsters and a lot of gore, which made this a very interesting read. Keri Arthur writes great paranormal romances and I can't wait to read the final book in this trilogy!
