The Embassy of Cambodia

Short Description for The Embassy of Cambodia Takes us deep into the life of a young woman, Fatou, domestic servant to the Derawals and escapee from one set of hardships to another. Beginning and ending outside the Embassy of Cambodia, which happens to be located in Willesden, NW London, absorbing, this title suggests how the apparently small things in an ordinary life always raise larger.

I borrowed the short description from the Bookdepository where I also bought my copy. I'm a loyal Zadie Smith reader. I've read several of her books and liked them a lot. This is a short story that originally appeared in the New Yorker. It's a bit unusual to see one short story published as a book, but I think this one deserved it. It has so many layers and there are so many things that have been implied that I made several different versions of my own in my head. I liked that about it. It's impressive. It's a lot of money to spend on not even seventy pages, but I still think it's worth it.
